Paws & Purpose

Building trust, balance, and learning through enrichment and play.

Positive Training isn’t Permissive Training

Just means we follow through without causing pain or fear. We use it as a teaching moment to advance our dog’s ability to respond when distractions are present. We don’t punish them for being an individual with curiosity.

The Power of Play: Why Dog-to-Dog Interaction is Essential

Play is often seen as a lighthearted activity, but for dogs, it is a critical component of healthy development. While games like fetch, tug, and chase strengthen the human–dog bond and foster cooperation, intraspecies play—play between dogs—offers unique benefits that humans simply cannot replicate.

Understanding the role of dog-to-dog play can help owners make informed decisions about their dog’s social life and overall well-being.

Why Dog-to-Dog Play Matters

Dogs are social animals. From puppyhood through adulthood, they rely on interactions with their own species to practice communication, develop self-regulation, and engage in natural behaviors. Play is not just “fun”—it is a vital tool for learning and maintaining balance.

The Benefits of Dog-to-Dog Play

1. Social Development

Play serves as a rehearsal ground for social skills. Dogs learn to:

  • Interpret body language and subtle communication signals.

  • Negotiate boundaries by testing and respecting limits.

  • Take turns and self-handicap (adjusting intensity to accommodate the other dog).

These skills are difficult to teach through human interaction alone, making canine companions an irreplaceable part of a dog’s social education.

2. Cognitive Growth

Dog-to-dog play requires problem-solving. Dogs constantly adjust their behavior based on the feedback they receive—whether a playmate runs, pauses, or signals for space. This type of flexible thinking builds resilience and adaptability. READ MORE!

Unleashed and Enriched: Fall Into Balance

As the long days of summer fade and fall settles in, your dog’s need for enrichment and exercise doesn’t disappear—it just looks a little different. Shorter days and cooler weather can make it harder to fit in everything your dog needs, but that’s where Unleashed and Enriched comes in.

This unique program is designed to give your dog purposeful activities that match their natural instincts and genetic needs—whether that’s scent work, problem-solving, physical exercise, or exploring new environments. While you’re busy at work, we’re busy ensuring your dog’s mind and body are fully engaged.

From tailored in-home enrichment setups to field trips that provide safe adventures, we create experiences that leave your dog fulfilled and relaxed. By the time you get home, your pup will be ready to curl up beside you—perfectly content to spend the evening unwinding while you enjoy your favorite show and a warm cup of cocoa.

Program visits start at just $80.

Give your dog more than just exercise—give them enrichment that lasts.

Meet Ollie: Harpeth High School’s Newest Support Companion

Harpeth High School has a new four-legged team member! Ollie has joined the school three days a week to support both students and staff. His role goes far beyond greetings—Ollie is there to sit with students during counseling sessions, provide comfort, and even present certificates of appreciation to students nominated by teachers for helping make the school a better place.

“Last April, I became interested in what it would look like to bring Ollie to school to help our students cope.   I am grateful for DogSpeak, and Gray and Nikki for making such a difference in Ollie's life. The hours of the training that they have given me, and Ollie have made this possible.  It has been a lot of work and challenges along the way, but it is the most meaningful thing I could have done for my dog.  He can enjoy his home environment without chaos, and his life is better because he receives so much love at school. Without the training from DogSpeak, this would not have been possible.   He is making such a positive difference with students and brings such joy to our building.” - Shannon (Ollie’s human)

As a Harpeth High graduate, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this wonderful addition to the community. Ollie represents the heart of what makes our schools special: connection, encouragement, and support.

I’m excited to see Ollie thriving in his role and look forward to watching more of Dixie’s Classroom Companions continue this important work across our school system.

This one deserves another listen! Especially in today’s world.
